Description
Manor Farmhouse is a farmhouse dated 1631, constructed from roughcast rubble stone with ashlar dressings. It features coped gables and ashlar stacks, with three diagonal shafts on the main ridge and two similar shafts on the rear chimney gable. The building has two storeys and an attic, presenting a formal three-gabled south front. This front includes ovolo-moulded mullion windows: a 2-light window with a hoodmould in the attic, a 3-light window with a dripcourse on the first floor, and a 4-light window with a dripcourse on the ground floor, all flanking a late 19th or early 20th-century gabled porch. Historical photographs indicate a 3-light window was originally located in the centre. The farmhouse has a moulded plinth, with the west end gable featuring similar windows on each floor. The east end gable has a similar 2-light attic window and a c1900 added outbuilding to the east. Historical photographs also show similar fenestration on the west gable and a second gable to the right with staircase fenestration. The rear of the building has a chimney gable to the right with a date plaque reading ILAL 1631, and a gable to the left, followed by a c1900 two-storey parallel rear range. The estate was owned by the Lyte family in the 16th century and was sold to J. Langton in 1618. In 1871, Kilvert described the house as ruinous, noting that the 'great hall and the grand staircase both gone.' It was repaired for the Neeld estate around 1900. The panelling in the Manor House at Castle Combe is said to have originated from this farmhouse, dated TL 1669 for Thomas Langton.
