Description
Penleigh Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from the early 17th century, with 18th-century additions and an early 19th-century wing. It is constructed of English garden wall bond brick and features a Bridgewater tiled roof with brick stacks. The building is arranged in an L-plan and is two stories high, with a former entrance front on the south side that has one window.
The 17th-century range includes a three-light cyma-mullioned casement window on the ground floor and a three-light T mullioned and transomed window on the first floor, along with a datestone inscribed with "G H / 1716" and toothed eaves. The attached 18th-century wing to the right has a four-panelled door and three and two-light casements. The 19th-century wing, which has a higher roofline, features French windows and both four-pane and 16-pane sash windows.
At the rear of the 17th-century range, there are three-light casements from the 20th and 19th centuries, along with a three-light mullioned and transomed casement on the first floor and a three-light casement in the attic. The right return has a two-light mullioned casement on the ground floor, a three-light mullioned and transomed window on the first floor, and a three-light attic casement, along with attached outbuildings.
Inside the 17th-century range, there is a blocked open fireplace and fine moulded cross beams in the west room on the ground floor, along with 19th-century joinery. The initials on the datestone belong to George Turner, who purchased the Penleigh estate in 1704.
