Description

Monkton House is a manor house, dating to 1757, and now subdivided into flats. It is constructed of limestone ashlar, with a double-pitched slate roof. The roof features ashlar stacks to the front and rear ranges, and one to the left of the valley. The design is in a mid-Georgian style, laid out in an L-shaped plan. The main front has three storeys and a symmetrical seven-bay facade, with four windows to the left return and three bays to the right return. The central three bays project slightly, topped by a modillioned pediment. A modillion cornice runs along the front and returns, and the parapet is balustraded above the windows. The windows have moulded architraves, with 3/6-pane sashes on the second floor and 6/6-pane sashes with cornices to the other floors. A prostyle portico with Ionic columns supports an entablature featuring a pulvinated palmette frieze and dentilled cornice, above a moulded architrave, leading to an eight-panelled door. The rear elevation presents a five-window range, and a large semicircular-arched stair window is located to the left of the centre. A lead rainwater head and pipe is dated 1757. The interior was altered during conversion to flats and was not inspected during listing.
