Description

The Trenchard Building, also known as Building 70, is a Grade II listed station headquarters for the Royal Flying Corps, Central Flying School, located at Upavon Camp. Built in 1913, it features lined rendering on brickwork and an asbestos slate roof. The building is single storey, with a central line of rooms flanked by wings at the front and a glazed corridor connecting them. There are entrances at both ends of the corridor, accessed by a flight of steps. The windows are twelve-pane sash style with sloping lead-clad sills. An extension block was added at the north-east end after 1917, which contains a conference and briefing room. The interior includes a restored west end that serves as the commandant's office and ante-room. This building is part of a significant group of purpose-built structures for the Central Flying School, which was established in 1912 under the leadership of Captain Paine, RN, and Major, later Viscount, Trenchard. The group also includes the Officers' Mess, Avon Club, post office, Racquet Court (circa 1912), Sergeants' Mess, four senior NCOs' quarters on Devon Road (1914-1929), four Junior Officers' quarters on York Road, Paine Cottage (the Commandant's house from 1912-1915), and Lord House (Single Officers' quarters).
