Description
1 The Green is a 18th-century, three-storey building constructed of chequered brick on a projecting plinth, featuring four-course string courses above the ground and first-floor windows. It has a heavy moulded wood cornice and a hipped slate roof. The upper floors contain seven windows, each two panes wide, with large panes arranged two panes high on the second floor and four panes high on the first floor. The ground floor has six windows, all three panes wide, though only the right-hand pair retains original glazing. All windows are fitted with stone cills.
The central entrance features a six-panel door within a heavy architrave frame, set in a stone porch supported by Doric pilasters and columns. The porch includes an entablature with a triglyph frieze, rosette ornament, moulded cornice, and a broken curved pediment topped with a central stone urn. It stands on a stone landing accessed by six steps and has an early 19th-century lamp holder above.
Inside, the right-hand ground floor room boasts a plaster cornice with modillions and egg and dart moulding, along with a chimneypiece that features egg and dart moulding, an architrave, a cornice, a pulvinated frieze with oak leaf mouldings, and a festoon of fruit on a raised panel. There are two doorways with a pulvinated frieze, dentils, and egg and dart moulding. Additionally, two modern Ionic columns support a lintel across the centre of the room.
1 The Green is part of a group with Nos 1A to 5 and Nos 3 to 15 Silverless Street.
