Description

No 75 on High Street is a house that likely dates from the 15th century, with possible 16th or 17th century elements concealed, and early to mid-18th century features along with 19th century alterations. The building is timber framed and rendered, topped with an old tiled roof. It has a two-room range that runs parallel to the street, with a passage on the right leading to a long rear wing.

The main elevation reflects 18th century character, although the timber frame, which is said to be close studded with decorative braces, is completely hidden from view. The house has two storeys and attics. On the left side, there is a central oriel window with plain sashes above a plain 19th century shop front. To the right, there are flush framed cased sashes with glazing bars, each with 16 panes, and another sash window above. A plank door with a plain surround leads into the passage. The roof features two 19th century gabled attic dormers with casements and glazing bars. The roof is cambered and includes a brick stack at the end.

Inside, at the east end between Nos 75 and 76, there is a medieval timber framed closed truss that is likely of cruck construction. This may be a remnant of an earlier building associated with either No 75 or No 76. When inspected from No 76, the truss shows a slightly cambered tie beam, convex brace, queen struts, and a slightly cambered collar, with the top of an apparent cruck also visible.
