Description

Atworth Primary School and School House is a primary school and school house founded in 1828 by Robert Hale of Cottles. It was enlarged in 1876, 1882, and 1897. The building is constructed of coursed rubble stone with a stone slate roof featuring coped verges and diagonally-set ashlar stacks on the front ranges, while the rear ranges have a Welsh slate roof. The structure has a rambling L-plan and is two storeys tall with a two-window schoolhouse.

The schoolhouse has a pointed four-panelled door to the right, with a two-light mullioned casement featuring arched lights and a hoodmould to the left. On the first floor, there are two two-light mullioned casements with arched lights. The parallel rear range has similar windows. Attached to the right is a single-storey schoolroom from 1828, which includes two two-light mullioned windows with arched pivot-hung lights and a hoodmould, as well as double doors with a hoodmould in a lean-to porch. A stone plaque with a relief-carved crest of the Hale family and the date 1828 is located on the gable.

There is a long added rear range that has four two-light mullioned windows and an arched door with a hoodmould. The rear wing also features similar windows. Inside, there are blocked fireplaces, 19th-century doors, and inserted ceilings. This building is a good example of a village school and schoolhouse.
