Description
Numbers 1 and 2 Flood Cottages are a pair of semi-detached cottages built in 1842. They are constructed from plastered cob and feature a Welsh slate roof with axial octagonal brick stacks. The cottages are two stories high and have four windows across the front. There are half-glazed 20th-century doors on the left and right, along with two 2-light and two 3-light casement windows on the ground floor. The first floor includes two 3-light and two 2-light casements. The side returns of the cottages are windowless, and the gables have plain bargeboards. At the rear, there are two 2-light casements and a 20th-century flat-roofed extension on the ground floor. A large cast-iron plaque on the wall at the center of the front first floor commemorates the construction of the cottages in 1842, which followed the Great Flood of 1841. Similar cottages can be found in Orcheston and Shrewton, although the latter is not included in this listing due to alterations.
