Description
The lychgate at the entry to the churchyard of the Church of St Giles was built around 1890, possibly by C.E. Ponting. It is constructed from timber on an ashlar base and features a stone slate half-hipped roof with lead gable finials, including a wrought iron cross on the northern gable. This highly ornamented Arts and Crafts Gothic structure has entrance arches that are cinquefoil cusped, adorned with winged cherub heads in the cusps. Inside, there is a three-bay layout with arches leading to collar trusses supported by bobbin-turned columns. The lychgate also includes three 2-light side openings with traceried heads, bobbin-turned piers, and vine-scroll carving above. A matching pair of gates to the north showcases finely detailed carpentry and ironwork.
