Description
Upper Swinley Farmhouse is a farmhouse with origins dating back to the 17th century, which was remodeled in the later 18th century. It is constructed of rubble stone and features a stone slate roof that is hipped at the northwest angle. The building has ashlar end stacks and a large front ridge stack with three diagonal shafts.
The farmhouse is two storeys high with an attic and has an L-plan layout. The double-fronted east side has three-light cyma-moulded flush mullion windows of 18th-century style on either side of a door set in an ashlar surround. This door is located within a mid-19th-century porch that has a coped gable, an arched front entry, and Tudor-arched side entries. There is a reset datestone reading "WC 1639" in the gable.
The north front features a one-window range of similar windows to the left, with a brick lean-to on the right. The south end wall has a sundial in the gable. There is a parallel rear range with a south stack. The interior has not been inspected.
Historically, the farmhouse was leased by the Hungerford family to the Coller family starting in 1583 and was sold to them in 1651. It was then sold to Reverend G. Estcourt around 1652, at which time the house was described as newly built following his death in 1664. In the 19th century, the farm was part of the Neeld of Grittleton estate.
