Description

College Farmhouse, now a house, displays a complex building history spanning the 17th, 18th, and early 19th centuries. Constructed of brick with a thatched roof, the house comprises three distinct sections. The central block is a small, original farmhouse with two bays, complemented by a single-bay service room at the rear, built with irregularly bonded brick. The front of this central section was refaced in the early 18th century using diaper brickwork. An east wing, two storeys in height, was added in the later 18th century. Around 1800-1810, a substantial double-pile, three-bay block was added to the west. This western block is particularly notable for its height, vitrified plat band, and a panelled door with a canopy in the right bay, positioned slightly forward and surmounted by a half-hipped roof. Windows generally have diagonal wood glazing bars creating square panes, although the rear features large tripartite sash windows. The house has a central, slightly recessed entrance leading to a through hall. Gable stacks incorporate diagonal shafts, and two round-headed flush dormers are visible on the roof. The interior of the western extension was remodelled in 1938 following a fire. A cobbled sarsen driveway extends across the front of the house.
