Description

This is a late 17th-century house, now divided into two dwellings, located on High Street, Upavon. It was originally timber-framed and had a thatched roof. The house is two storeys high with an attic, originally featuring three bays, with a single-storey extension to the north. The timber frame sits on a brick sill, with posts supported by sarsens. The frame is three panels high on each floor; the first floor juts out on both sides, supported by carved brackets, though some are missing. The original layout comprised two rooms, with a central chimney stack in the narrower third bay. The main entrance is now at the rear, replacing the original front entrances, whose location is not known. The house was refurbished around 1965, with the replacement of windows with new casements incorporating top lights. A small dormer window with two panes is visible in the attic. The roof is half-hipped. Inside, a room on the north side contains a fine spine beam with jeweled stop-chamfered run-out stops. The large timber fire beams within the chalkstone stack are now faced with brick. The south bay functions as a separate dwelling and includes an added bathroom.
