Description

Oakhill Down Lock and Bridge is a lock and accommodation bridge over the Kennet and Avon Canal, built between 1794 and 1799 under the direction of chief engineer J. Rennie. The lock is faced with brick and features stone copings. It has been restored and includes upper and lower timber gates; the upper gate has side paddles, while the lower gate is equipped with British Waterways arm-mounted gear. The bridge, located below the lower gate, has a red brick oval arch made of one and a half bricks, with a blue string course and a parapet that includes flush half-round copings and stone end blocks. The bridge is splayed on plan. Together, the lock and bridge form a cohesive group.
