Description
Somerset Hospital, formerly known as the Duchess of Somerset Almshouse and Hospital and Chapel, is a Grade II* listed building located on Bath Road in Froxfield. It was established in 1694, with additions in 1775 and 1813, and was built for the Duchess of Somerset, earning the name The College. The structure is made of red brick with vitrified brick banding and features tiled roofs.
The charity dwellings are arranged around a large rectangular courtyard, with a gatehouse at the center of the south elevation, built in 1813. Each dwelling consists of two storeys and one bay, with a lateral door leading to a stair passage, a living room, and a narrow kitchen. The eastern half, dating from 1694, includes doors and windows with ogee moulded stone surrounds, a boarded door with a small timber canopy and lattice sides, and two-light windows topped with brick relieving arches. The eaves are dentilled in brick.
The western half, constructed in 1775, lacks stone detailing but features a brick plat band and leaded timber windows. The south elevation has some blind windows and boxed eaves throughout. The central gatehouse from 1813 is made of stone, with tall buttresses and moulded carriage openings featuring a Tudor arch. The upper level has three quatrefoil lights and a crenellated parapet. The pitched roof carries a clock tower and bell turret topped with an apex wind vane, along with a dedicatory inscription above the entrance and a sundial on the internal rear facade.
