Description
The Chapel to Somerset Hospital, built in 1813, was commissioned by James Brudenell Bruce, the Earl of Ailsbury, in memory of Sarah, Dowager Duchess of Somerset. This Gothic-style chapel is constructed from ashlar limestone and features a concealed lead roof. It has three bays and is located in the center of the hospital's courtyard. The south side has two 2-light windows with shallow cinquefoil heads, along with thin buttresses and a crocketed wall canopy frieze that includes a dedicatory inscription. The east and west sides each have three-light windows. Inside, the chapel features paired panelled wall pilasters that support a painted timber vault with silvered ribs. The east end has a later 19th-century raised and tiled area with a communion rail, while white painted panelled stalls face the central aisle, and there is an octagonal pulpit.
