Description

The Hewetson Memorial Cross at Fargo Plantation is a free-standing memorial located near Stonehenge, accompanied by a separate field plaque to the north-east of the cross, situated south of The Packway and within the vicinity of the Larkhill Garrison.

The memorial cross is positioned on the north side of the former A344 at the south-east corner of Fargo Plantation, on land purchased for the National Trust through a national appeal and given on 10 June 1929. It is approximately 1.3 kilometers east of Airmen’s Cross, which honors Captain Eustace Loraine and Staff Sergeant Richard Wilson, who died in a flying accident on 5 July 1912. The Hewetson memorial features a tall stone Celtic cross with hemispherical bosses on each arm and at the center of the wheel-head. It stands on a square plinth that is raised on a two-stepped base. The memorial is enclosed by a small square area that is kerbed and surfaced with gravel.

An inscription is incised into a slate tablet on the front face of the plinth, which reads: "IN MEMORY/ OF/ MAJOR ALEXANDER WILLIAM HEWETSON/ 66TH BATTERY ROYAL FIELD ARTILLERY/ WHO WAS KILLED WHILST FLYING/ ON THE 17TH JULY 1913 NEAR THIS SPOT."

The field plaque is located beside the bridleway south of The Packway, about 300 meters south-east of the Church of St Alban the Martyr, on Ministry of Defence land, and approximately 650 meters north-west of the Grade II*-listed Buildings 455 and 456 (Five Aircraft Hangars) at Durrington Camp. The plaque features a low relief carving of the memorial cross, located about 2.8 kilometers to the south-west, along with a tablet that replicates the cross’s dedicatory inscription.
