Description

Merion Cottage and the attached cottage to the east, known as The Chalkhouse Cottage, is a row of four or five cottages that have been converted into two dwellings. They date from the 18th and 19th centuries. The cottages are constructed from chalk block with brick detailing and are extended with chalk, flint, and brick. They have thatched roofs and are single storey with an attic.

The original section consists of four bays, featuring a sill and two bands of four brick courses. The building rises from one to one and a half storeys, constructed in header bond brickwork. On the left end, there is a half bay containing the main stack, which has flint lacings, and the building has been extended twice to the left, likely in the late 18th or early 19th century, now known as Merion Cottage.

The entrance to Merion Cottage features a 20th-century panelled and studded oak door set within a cambered half-brick arch, while a similar door at the right end has been replaced by a window. The cottages have timber two-light windows with applied leading in matching brick openings. There are seven flush dormers with brick cheeks, and Merion Cottage has a 20th-century panelled door. The building has four brick stacks, and the roof is half-hipped to the left.
