Description

Coulston House with outbuildings is a late 18th-century farmhouse located in East Coulston. The building features a stucco exterior on brick and has a two-span hipped roof covered with Welsh slate, along with brick chimney stacks. It is two stories tall and has a five-window south front. The central entrance door has six fielded panels and a fanlight, which is set within a Doric portico. On either side of the door are two 12-pane sash windows. The first floor includes three sash windows and two blind windows, topped by a cornice leading to a plain blocking course.

The right side of the house has three sash windows on the ground floor and two on the first floor. The left side mirrors this with three ground floor sashes, two first floor sashes, and one blind window. At the rear, there is one six-panelled door and one half-glazed door, along with a sash window on the ground floor, all within a slated verandah. The first floor features two sash windows and one blind window.

Inside, the house has a central entrance hall that leads to a stair hall with a semi-circular fluted arch. The open well staircase has a cast-iron balustrade with open treads and a wreathed mahogany handrail. The landing features a balustrade and four fluted columns with stylised Corinthian capitals. The original joinery includes six-panelled doors with moulded architraves adorned with rosettes, and window architraves with consoles and shutters.

Attached to the rear of the house are several contemporary outbuildings. These include a brewhouse with planked doors and casements on the rear right, and a two-storey dairy and cheese room with margin-pane casements and a six-panelled door on the left. Both structures are built of English garden wall bond brick with slate roofs and have verandahs at the front. The cobbled yard is divided in two by a low brick wall, with single-storey ranges of open-fronted shelters and workshops in the north yard, which includes a forge in the northwest corner, complete with fittings.
