Description
Blacklands Mill is a corn mill and mill-house built around 1800 to 1810. It is constructed of red brick with stone windows, topped by a slate roof and coped gables. The mill is two stories high with an attic and features a four-window range. At the south end, there is an original iron water-wheel made by Maundrell of Calne, which is located under the slate roof. The building has brick dentilled eaves and casement windows set in unmoulded flush stone surrounds.
On the west side, the first floor has two pairs of 2-light windows, a loading door with a cambered brick head, and another 2-light window. The ground floor includes a 2-light window, a door with a cambered brick head, a blocked 2-light window, and another 2-light window. The south end wall features an attic 2-light window with a cambered head. Inside, the mill retains its complete original working machinery.
To the north, there is an L-plan mill-house that has a lower roof but shares similar architectural details. The west side of the mill-house has five upper 2-light windows, with the end windows blank, and five ground floor openings that have been altered in the 20th century or are blank. The north end includes a 20th-century door and hood, along with various casement windows. The roof is hipped at the north-west angle, and there is a stack at the east end. The mill was likely built for J. Merewether of Blackland Park.
