Description
Middlehill House is a house built around 1830-1840, which is a recasing of a mid-18th century building. It features an ashlar front with a hipped, broad-eaved slate roof. The earlier roofs, made of plain tiles, are visible at the rear. The house is two stories tall with an attic and has a square plan.
The front range includes paired octagonal stacks at the right end of the ridge, three later flat dormers, and a three-window front range, with the upper floor painted. There is a first-floor band, and the windows are sash types, designed with a thick center bar that creates the appearance of paired sashes with margin lights. The ground floor windows are set in chamfered surrounds.
A broad central elliptical arched doorway features a traceried fanlight above half-glazed double doors, with narrow lights on each side. The house has a large lean-to iron verandah with eight bays and a glazed roof, which continues in five bays along the west front. The west front has a two-window range of similar windows, with the first floor on the right being false and the ground floor on the right featuring a French window with an overlight. There is a cluster of three octagonal stacks on the ridge.
The east front has been raised to match the west front, with an eaves roof, but has irregular fenestration. From the rear, it is clear that part of the front range is a refacing of a mansard-roofed house, which includes a central rear stair tower and paired mansard-roofed rear wings. One side has been refaced and heightened to match the east front, while the other side is concealed behind the west range.
