Description

Barn Cottage is a cottage dating from the 17th century with later alterations. It is timber framed with wattle and daub and brick infilling, with an extension to the right that was originally a weatherboarded barn and all under a thatched roof. The cottage is single storey with an attic, and has two bays. The left bay has a gable facing the street, with two panels framing a high brick plinth which forms a single bay parlour cross wing, possibly originally extended to the south. The right bay has an 18th-century gable stack set forward of the left bay. Corner braces are visible, and some framing has been replaced with brick. A weatherboarded porch covers the entrance, leading into a projecting panel of the right bay, under a pent roof. Beyond the stack, the barn has been converted to domestic use; the south wall and western bay were rebuilt around 1976. Inside the original cottage bays are chamfered spine beams with run-out stops. A scratch date, WN 1779, is visible on a fire lintel, along with an oven front. The barn originally had a through passage against the dwelling. The roof is an elementary queen strut roof.
