Description

This is a group of houses, numbered 10 to 19, built in the 18th century and originally occupied by cloth weavers. The terrace comprises separate dwellings stacked one above the other, with rear entrances to the upper floors. The buildings are constructed of ashlar and have a modern pantile roof with eaves. They are three storeys high with attics. A plain string course runs at all sill levels and at the levels of the first and second floors. Number 12 forms the central feature and has sash windows arranged in groups of three, with glazing bars and architrave surrounds. A square-headed doorway, also with an architrave surround and a flat, moulded cornice, is located centrally. The flanking houses are symmetrically arranged on either side of number 12, featuring sash windows in plain reveals and grouped in pairs, with glazing bars. The doorways of each pair of houses are adjacent and share a flat, moulded stone hood supported by three cut stone brackets. All attic windows are two-light casements with wooden frames. Numbers 7, 9 to 19 form a group with other listed buildings in Church Street, alongside the Chantry and Little Chantry. The group also includes the Catholic Church of St Thomas More, Market Street, numbers 5 and 6, 27 to 31 (consecutive), and a wall at Builders Yard, Newtown.
