Description
35 and 35A The Close is a building from the 16th century, with possible earlier origins, and has been altered in the 18th and 19th centuries. It has two storeys and an attic, topped with a steep hipped roof made of old tiles. The north front features a mix of brick, some stone rubble in the chimney, and flint work in the lower parts of the wall. It includes irregular stone mullioned casements with small barred lights, one 18th-century sash window, and two wooden casements. There is a half gable with a chimney to the left of the centre and a door with four flush panels, topped by a flat hood on shaped brackets.
The south front has been altered in the 18th century and later, with a rendered facing. It displays irregular fenestration, including two half octagon superimposed bays flanking a 19th-century canted bay window on the first floor to the right of the centre. The left half octagon bay has a tiled gable. The outer bays feature three-light windows, with another window to the left and an early 18th-century window to the left of centre on the first floor, some retaining their glazing bars. There is a large four-light leaded casement, possibly from the 19th century, beneath the 19th-century bay window, and a six-panel door, partly glazed, in a plain frame to the right of centre, flanked by pilasters and topped with a flat hood on cut brackets. This building is noted for its picturesque appearance. All the listed buildings in The Close form a group.
