Description

The Hare and Hounds is an inn dating from the late 17th century and early 18th century, constructed from rubble stone with stone tiled roofs. It features a coped west gable, a sundial at the west end, a ridge stack, an east end stack, and a rear wing with a coped south gable. The north front is two storeys high with flush quoins at the north-west angle. The central door is set in a chamfered and stopped surround, topped with a hood on brackets. To the left, there are two ground floor two-light recessed ovolo-moulded windows with hoodmoulds, and on the first floor, a pair of early 18th century twelve-pane sash windows in raised bead-moulded surrounds. To the right, there are ovolo-moulded mullion windows, one three-light and one two-light on each floor, all with hoodmoulds. The upper three-light window has a small dormer gable above it. The west end wall features a three-light recessed chamfered upper window and a three-light recessed ovolo-moulded window below, both with hoodmoulds, along with a fine bolection-moulded doorcase to the right, topped with a cornice. The rear wing, which is one and a half storeys, has a broad coped dormer gable over two twelve-pane sash windows in raised bead-moulded surrounds, and a single moulded cornice above. The ground floor has a similar pair of windows and cornice, with a blank moulded oval panel to the left. There is also a large 19th century south-east rear wing, built of painted rubble and two storeys high with a slate roof.
