Description

The Duke of Cumberland is an inn dating from the late 17th century, constructed from rubble stone with stone tiled roofs and featuring one and a half storeys. It has an 'L'-shaped plan with a ridge stack, a coped west gable, and a west end stack on the main range, as well as a north end stack on the north wing. The south front, which faces the garden, has a two-window range of recessed ovolo-moulded windows with hoodmoulds, including two three-light windows on the ground floor and a two-light and a three-light window in the dormer gables. The north side and east end are roughcast with exposed cornerstones. The rear wing has an east side dormer gable featuring a two-light mullion window with a hoodmould and a casement window on the ground floor. The north end, facing the street, has a 19th-century two-light window on the ground floor and a flush panelled door set in a chamfered surround. There is a catslide roof on the west side. The north side of the main range is mostly obscured by 20th-century flat-roofed additions, but there is a dormer gable with a two-light recessed cyma-moulded window and a hoodmould. At the west end, there are various linked outbuildings, including a formerly free-standing building with Bridgwater tiles, flush quoins, and a 16-pane window on the west side. Inside, there is a chamfered and stopped centre beam that is grooved for a partition and a spine beam.
