Description
This is a row of four cottages located on Old Derry Hill, part of the Bowood estate, dating to the late 18th or early 19th century. Numbers 12 and 13 were altered around 1850 to a picturesque style. The cottages are constructed of rubble stone with Bridgwater tile roofs and have ridge stacks, along with a south end stack. The 1850 alterations incorporate half-timbering and squared rubble stone.
Numbers 10 and 11 have a two-story, four-window front featuring casement windows in brick surrounds. This includes four casement pairs above and two triple casement windows and doors on each side of the ground floor. A tiled verandah, supported by timber posts, runs along the front. The verandah has an open gable in the centre and smaller gables positioned in front of each door.
Numbers 12 and part of Number 13 feature stone embellishments combined with half-timbering and leaded windows. To the right is a stone ground floor with a four-light window, a jettied upper floor and a barge-boarded dormer gable projecting above the eaves with a casement window. To the left, a projecting principal gable is barge-boarded and half-timbered above an open ground floor supported by timber posts, providing access to Nos 12 and 13. A casement window sits above the upper floor. A door to No 13 and a range to the left with a casement window and an upper 1850s barge-boarded dormer are set back from the original front wall line.
