Description

A pair of mid-17th century gate piers, iron gates, and flanking estate boundary walls, situated on the west side of Countess Road, Amesbury, leading to Amesbury Abbey. The gate piers are constructed from limestone, and are tall and square, featuring narrow inner and outer pilasters, all treated with alternating plain and vermiculated rustication. They have corniced caps surmounted by rock-faced blocks supporting ball finials. The iron gates have a spiked centre rail and dog rails, and a spiked overthrow. To the left of the piers is a flint wall approximately 3 metres high, with stone quoins, weathered limestone copings, and an 8-metre run leading to Kent House. A pedestrian gate is included within this section. To the right of the piers, a coursed flint wall, incorporating some limestone blocks and weathered limestone copings, runs for approximately 92 metres and stands about 2 metres high.
