Description

Comilla House, originally an inn and now a retirement home and commercial premises, dates from the late 18th century, with an early to mid-18th century rear wing. The building features a facade of red brick in Flemish bond and has a tiled roof. The rear wing is constructed of flint with Chilmark stone chequerwork. It stands two storeys high with attics. The central section facing Countess Road is symmetrical, consisting of three wide bays that include a central stair hall and flanking reception rooms. Architectural details include a plat band bedded in lime putty and brick dentilled eaves. The entrance features a central recessed six-panelled door with a glazed overlight, framed by a timber doorcase with a bracketed canopy. The windows are sixteen-paned sash types with keystones above gauged brick lintels, and there are panelled shutters. Above the door is a twelve-paned sash window, and there are three hipped dormers. To the left, there is a contemporary bay that forms a corner with High Street. The ground level has stone quoins and a 20th-century shop front. Along High Street, the facade continues with a two-bay structure that has a cellar and similar detailing, though it features 20th-century windows and two narrow 19th-century dormers. An additional two bays were added to the right in the 19th century, with twelve and sixteen-paned sash windows, and further extensions were made around 1985, replacing a single-storey addition. A sun fire plate is present, and at the angle with High Street, there is a carved head that was inserted during rebuilding around 1960.
