Description

The George Hotel, located on High Street in Amesbury, dates back to around 1560 and was originally commissioned for Philip Power. The building has undergone alterations in the 17th century, modernisation around 1768, and a western extension in the early 20th century. The construction is timber framed, with a rendered front, brick to the rear, and mathematical tiles over the carriageway. The roof is tiled.

The hotel consists of two main blocks along the street. The block to the right comprises four bays and includes a carriageway through the gabled left bay. This section features a recessed door and irregular fenestration with paired and triple eight-pane sashes and casement windows. Other features include two hipped dormers and a large stack backing onto the carriageway with five diagonally set shafts. A secondary stack is on the right gable. The carriageway has been heightened, and a large canted oriel window is situated on the first floor, accompanied by a window in the gable. The left block, dating from the 17th century, has sixteen-pane sashes to the ground floor and paned casement windows to the first floor, with three hipped dormers and stacks to the left gable and at the junction with the right block. The carriageway doors are inset. A long rear wing, likely originally stables, extends from the right block and has been increased to two storeys. A 20th-century hall is attached to the left block. An additional block, constructed around 1916, is located at the far left end, featuring rendered and roughcast brickwork with a tiled roof. The right bay of this block is three-storey and gabled, containing a framed shop window and door on the ground floor, and twelve-pane sashes with gauged lintels above. A Venetian window is positioned on the second floor, framed by a keyed brick arch. The left bay has a double-door entrance set in a stone frame, with a cantilevered balcony having cast iron railings above. A keyed oculus is located to the left, and sash windows are on the first floor, with a hipped dormer above. A roughcast brick stack is present.

The west-facing elevation returns with close-set twelve-pane sashes and brick gauged lintels for seven bays. A stair is located in the second bay, raised above the eaves as a flush gabled dormer and featuring an elongated Venetian window on the second floor. Three hipped dormers are also present. The interior has been altered, and both blocks retain deeply chamfered cross beams. There is 17th-century wainscot at the head of the stair and a turned balustrade.
