Description
The Warminster War Memorial is a First World War memorial that was unveiled in May 1921, with later additions. It is made of Bath stone and stands approximately 6.5 meters high. The memorial features a wheel-head cross on a tall, tapering shaft divided into four sections, which is set upon a shallow, square plinth. The cross is adorned with Celtic-style relief carvings, and at its base, there is a depiction of a lamb and flag. The front of the shaft includes incised decoration and a carving of St George, along with a dedication that reads: "IN PROUD & / GRATEFUL / MEMORY OF / WARMINSTER / MEN WHO / FELL IN THE / GREAT WAR / 1914-1919." Below this dedication, the lower front part of the shaft is inscribed with "1939-1945." The names of the fallen from both the First and Second World Wars are listed on the other three sides of the shaft, while the northwest, northeast, and southeast sides of the plinth also bear inscriptions of those who died in the Second World War and in Afghanistan. Attached to the plinth is a stone planter inscribed with "BEST KEPT WAR MEMORIAL 1968," and there is a similar planter, dated 1964, located in front of the memorial.
The memorial is situated on a paved surface within a small garden, which is enclosed by low stone rubble walls that originally included a pedestrian gateway. This gateway has since been replaced with a wider entrance, and the piers have been rebuilt. In 2010, a sculpture representing the trenches of the First World War was added to the garden.
