Description

Alley Cottage, attached to the north side of Barford Park Farmhouse, is a cottage and stable built in 1695, as indicated by the incised initials "CD" on the keystone above the front window. It was converted into a farm cottage in the early 19th century. The building is constructed of English bond brick and features a tiled hipped roof with brick stacks. It is a single storey with an attic and has three windows.

The front includes a planked door in a beaded case to the left, a cross window in the center with the dated keystone, a blocked door to the left, and an inserted doorway with a 19th-century casement to the right. The attic has three gablets with 2-light casements. The right side has an inserted planked door, three-light cast-iron casements, and small casements. The rear outshut has a double gabled roof with a central planked door in a chamfered case, along with 2-light and 1-light cast-iron casements. There is a tile-hung extension in the valley between the gables.

Inside, the cottage features planked doors, a 17th-century newel staircase with splat balusters, and a plank and muntin partition below the handrail. There is also an 18th-century beaded fireplace and doorcase on the north side. The initials "CD" refer to Sir Charles Duncombe, who purchased the Barford Park Estate in 1690; Barford House was demolished in 1815.
