Description
Chalkhill House is a detached house located on Downton Barford Lane. The building features a 17th-century rear range and a front range built in 1784. It is constructed of Flemish bond brick with a tiled roof and brick stacks, forming an L-plan structure. The house is two stories high with a six-window front. The central two bays project forward, featuring a half-glazed door with a 12-pane sash window to the left, and two 12-pane sashes on either side. The first floor has six 12-pane sash windows. A pediment is located above the two central bays, and the eaves are adorned with dentils. A reset datestone at the base of the wall reads 1640/I.C., likely indicating the date of the rear range.
On the right side, the return has two blind windows on the first floor and an external stack. The 17th-century range includes 3-light and 2-light chamfered mullioned windows with hoodmoulds, as well as one 4-light casement. The first floor has a 16-pane sash and a 3-light sash, along with one hipped dormer in the roof featuring a 2-light casement. The left return is windowless, and a quoin at the base of the wall is inscribed TL/1784. The rear of the house has scattered fenestration, mostly comprising sash windows. Inside, there is a late 18th-century newel staircase with stick balusters, a marble fireplace on the first floor with a corniced mantel, and internal shutters on the front windows.
