Description
4 and 5 High Street is a former carriage entrance and lodge, now serving as shops, dating from the 1820s or 1830s. The building is constructed of limestone ashlar, with No.4 painted and a slate roof that is hipped to the left. The entrance features a severe Classical style. No.5 is a single storey, while No.4 has two storeys, a cornice, and a blocking course. The first floor of No.4 has three windows with 20th-century glazing that is partly obscured, and the ground floor has a late 20th-century shop front. No.5, which was the former carriage entrance, is slightly stepped forward and has plain pilasters and a plinth. The cornice and blocking course are similar to those of No.4 and frame the opening, now also a shop front. Above the centre of the blocking course is a heavy panelled parapet with a cornice and blocking course that supports a plinth inscribed "UNITY AND LOYALTY". This is topped by a large pinnacle and two shields bearing the Chippenham Coat of Arms. The interior has not been inspected.
