Description
Nos 9 and 9A on Church Street are end cottages dating from the late 17th century. They are two storeys tall and have a lower elevation than No 10. The buildings are constructed of rubble with ashlar window surrounds and feature stone-tiled roofs. No 9 has one window on the first floor and two windows on the ground floor, all of which are casements with leaded lights. There is a plain square-headed doorway to the left, which has a four-panel door. No 9A has two windows, both are two-light leaded casements with stone mullions and a dripmould that extends over both windows. There is also a plain square-headed doorway to the left. A tablet between the first-floor windows reads "D.W.S. 1697".
These cottages are part of a group of listed buildings on Church Street, which includes the Chantry, Little Chantry, Barton Orchard, and the Catholic Church of St Thomas More on Market Street, as well as Nos 7 and 9 to 19 Barton Orchard, Nos 5 and 6, and 27 to 31 (consecutive), along with a wall in Newtown.
