Description

Nos 1 and 1A, Brown Street, date from the 18th century. They were formerly part of the Black Horse Inn, the remaining portions of which are located at Nos 18 and 22 Winchester Street. The building is two storeys and constructed of painted brick. It features an old tile roof with a stepped eaves cornice and two hipped dormers. There are two flush framed sash windows on each floor. The ground floor windows have been altered, and there are plain doors set under cambered arches. No. 1A has a segmented brick relieving arch over its ground floor, which formerly served as a carriageway to the Inn yard. Nos 1 and 1A are historically linked as a group with Nos 18 to 22 (even) Winchester Street.
