Description

Sundial Cottage is a house dating primarily from the late 17th century, with extensions and alterations made in the early to mid-18th century. It is built with roughcast on rubble stone, featuring ashlar dressings and a Bridgwater tile roof. The building has ridge and end stacks. The original part of the house was double-fronted, originally with two three-light recessed mullion windows on each floor. These windows had hoodmoulds over the upper lights and a dripcourse that stepped over the moulded and stopped stone doorcase. A sundial above the door is dated AWPW 1685. In the 18th century, the mullions were removed and replaced with tripartite windows featuring a central sash and small panes. The house was extended to the left, adding a door and a two-light window below and a three-light window above, also with a hoodmould. The original lower dripcourse was continued and stepped over the door. A 20th-century window now occupies the position of the original door. The north end of the building has an attic window with a cyma-mould; the rear wall has similar windows on both floors. Various additions are present to the rear and south end. Inside, a deep-chamfered beam is visible, characterised by run-out stops.
