Description

A pair of houses dating from the late 17th century, built of rubble stone with a concrete plain tile roof and brick end stacks. They have two storeys and an attic, with a three-window front. The windows are cyma-moulded, two-light recessed mullioned windows, and the lower windows were originally alternating with doors set in flush moulded surrounds. A dripcourse runs over the ground floor, stepped above the doors. The design is near symmetrical, but minor inconsistencies suggest construction in two phases. Upper windows have hoodmoulds, but a dripcourse is above the left-hand window. The left side has flush quoins that are not full-height, and the ground floor left-hand two-light window is not aligned with the window above. The right-hand cottage has 20th-century alterations including a window replacing a former door, and the former central window now has only one light. A modern door has been inserted to the right. There is a lean-to on the east wall, and a barrel-vaulted cellar. Local tradition suggests these houses are on the site of a former chapel-of-ease, converted to a house by 1670, although there is no visible medieval work.
