Description
West Barn Farm is a house and barn complex dating to 1616 and 1742, constructed of rubble stone with a stone tiled roof. The building follows a long house plan, with a barn situated at the east end, likely built in the 18th century. The east gable has a cope, while a projecting cart entry, featuring a hipped roof, extends southwards, positioned to the right of centre. To the right of the cart entry is a lean-to, and to the left a Tudor-arched loft window. A plain timber lintel covers a rear cart entry, with a lean-to to the right.
Between the barn and the house is a former through passage, marked by flush, round-arched doorways. The southern side of this passage has been infilled with a 20th-century door, while the northern side is blocked. The inscription "I E 1742" appears over the south archway. The house range has a four-window front. From the right side is a moulded doorcase with a hoodmould and the incised date 1616, above a recessed single light window. A two-window range of 19th-century flush chamfered mullion windows follows, consisting of two 2-light windows, a single light window, and a door set within a 19th or 20th-century gabled porch. Further along, there is a 3-light recessed cyma-moulded mullion window with a 3-light timber window above. A west end stack is present. The rear wall mostly contains 20th-century openings, and a large, central projecting chimney gable has a 2-light recessed chamfered mullion window at ground floor level.
