Description
The barn at Great Chalfield Manor, which is now partly used as a squash court, dates from the 17th century and features a 5-bay section added in 1752. It is constructed of random rubble stone and has a stone slate roof. The east side has a half-hipped central porch with double planked doors, a datestone in the gable, and three arrowloop vents on either side. The right-hand bay also includes a half-hipped porch with an elliptical-arched doorway. The left return of the barn has additional arrowloop vents. Inside the left-hand section, the squash court is located, but the roof timbers are not visible. The right-hand part is said to have crucks, although these were not visible during the survey in November 1986.
