Description

Spring Cottage is a house, originally built in the mid-17th century and later divided into two cottages. It is situated on Calf Lane in Stanton St Bernard, with its gable end facing the lane. The house has a timber frame set on sarsen stone footings, with brick noggings and a thatched roof. It is two storeys and an attic, designed with a lobby entry plan and a continuous narrow lean-to extension at the rear. The timber framing is four panels high, incorporating some herringbone brick infilling. The gable framing uses narrow panels and a lozenge pattern of brickwork, which may be original. A 20th-century brick porch, originally used as bathrooms, now features glazed doors and a stone lean-to at the rear, rebuilt in brick. The windows are timber casement style. The roof has half-hipped ends and a central brick chimney stack.

Inside, the east room, which served as a parlour, has a rebuilt fireplace. The west room, originally the kitchen, retains a heavy chamfered fire beam and an oven within the chimney stack. Both rooms feature stop-chamfered spine beams. A 17th-century staircase is located within the rear lean-to, with a bead arris newel and a moulded handrail. The roof structure comprises double purlins.
