Description

Lower Long Dean Mill is a building that has been converted into a house, dating from the late 18th century, although it has an earlier core. The mill house and a drying shed to the north still stand, while the mill that was once attached to the south has been demolished. The structure is built of ashlar and rubble stone, topped with stone tiled roofs. The mill house features an ashlar front with coped gables and ashlar end wall stacks. It is three stories high and double fronted, with two 9-pane attic windows and two pairs of 8-pane sash windows on the first and ground floors, all framed with bead-moulded flush surrounds. The central entrance is a 6-panel door, also with a bead-moulded surround and a pediment supported by brackets above. The building has a raised plinth and bands at the floor levels and eaves.

The drying shed to the north is elevated on a bank to match the roof level of the mill house. It has a rubble stone base with ashlar piers supporting a five-bay drying floor, which has been infilled with rubble stone. There are two 6-pane windows and a loading door at the rear, along with two doors leading to a lower passage. The rear wall of the house is made of rubble stone and features cyma-moulded one and two-light windows, some of which have been reused from a demolished rear range.
