Description

The Old Cottage is a building located on Salisbury Road in Steeple Langford, dating from 1788, as indicated by the inscription "S & M / 1788" above the left doorway. Originally part of a row of three cottages, it is now combined with No 17. The structure is built of Flemish bond brick with limestone quoins and features a Roman tiled roof with brick stacks.

The building is two stories high and has six windows, with casements throughout. The Old Cottage, situated on the left, has a 20th-century door and a blocked doorway that now contains a 9-pane fixed window, along with two 2-light and two single casements. There is a three-brick plat band with a dentilled lower course at the first floor, which includes a 3-light window, two 2-light windows, and a 3-light casement. The stack on the left has a toothed band at the capping.

No 17 features a 20th-century porch and has 2-light casements on both the ground and first floors. The right return of the building is made of chequered flint and limestone, with a moulded elliptically-arched attic light that is likely reset. The rear of the building also has 2-light casements. The interior of No 17 includes a chamfered beam and an open fireplace with a chamfered lintel on brick jambs. The interior of The Old Cottage was not accessible during the survey conducted in September 1985.
