Description
SALT LANE 1. 1594 (North Side) Nos 17 & 19 (The Pheasant Inn & Crewe's Hall) SU 1430 SE 2/254 28.2.52. 1I* GV 2. Corner site with Rollestone Street qv. The Pheasant Inn is C15, 2 storeys, timber framed with brick and plaster infilling. Gable end old tile roof. Oversailing gable to left hand facing Rollestone Street with one casement lst floor and on ground floor 2 modern glazing bar windows replacing door. Rest of fenestration on this front irregular casements (some modern) including central 4 light Yorkshire casement and modern glazed door to Bar. Front to Salt Lane is similar with large yard entrance to left. Crewe's Hall is on the 1st floor at the back of the Inn with access by an outer covered staircase. Timber framed room, truss exposed with tie beam, cambered collar, carved braces, clasped purlins, curved windbraces below these. A similar truss visible over driveway to yard. The room was left by Philip Crewe (a school master, son of a shoemaker who died in 1638) to the "Company of Schoemaker within the Cittee of Newe Sarum." The main range at 1st floor level has exposed wall posts, tie beams and curved wall braces.
