Description

The Pheasant Inn and Crewe's Hall, located at 17 and 19 Salt Lane, is a Grade II* listed building dating back to the 15th century. It occupies a corner site with Rollestone Street. The Pheasant Inn is two stories tall, constructed with a timber frame and brick and plaster infilling, topped with an old tile roof. The gable end facing Rollestone Street features an oversailing gable, with one casement window on the first floor and two modern glazing bar windows replacing a door on the ground floor. The rest of the windows on this front are irregular casements, some modern, including a central four-light Yorkshire casement and a modern glazed door leading to the bar. The front facing Salt Lane is similar, with a large yard entrance to the left.

Crewe's Hall is situated on the first floor at the back of the Inn, accessible via an outer covered staircase. This room retains its timber framing, with an exposed truss that includes a tie beam, cambered collar, carved braces, clasped purlins, and curved windbraces. A similar truss is visible over the driveway to the yard. The room was bequeathed by Philip Crewe, a schoolmaster and son of a shoemaker who died in 1638, to the "Company of Shoemaker within the Cittee of Newe Sarum." The main range at the first floor level displays exposed wall posts, tie beams, and curved wall braces. The buildings from Nos 9 to 19 (odd) form a group.
