Description

The barn at Maddington Farm dates from around 1600, with an addition made around 1700. It is constructed of flint with stone quoins and dressings, topped with a tiled roof, and features walls lined with chalk. The barn has five bays, along with a two-bay addition to the south, all aligned on the same axis. The east front is two stories high and has two windows. It includes a moulded stone plinth and an inserted entry at the center. To the left, there are two 2-light round-arched windows with hoodmoulds, and to the right, there are two similar windows. The addition on the left features a chamfered square-headed doorway and two 2-light chamfered recessed mullioned windows.

On the first floor of the left section, there is a moulded string course and two blocked 2-light mullioned windows, along with an inserted doorway to the left. The main range has one inserted door on the first floor. The right return has two 2-light round-arched windows with hoodmoulds on the first floor and saddleback coped verges. The rear of the barn has a blocked square-headed entry, likely inserted, and no windows. Attached to the rear right of the later addition are 20th-century barns, and to the right return is a pair of 19th-century farm cottages, which are not of special interest.

Inside, there is an inserted floor from around 1800, which replaced an original floor that was removed during the 18th century. The walls are lined with chalk. The five-bay roof features a tie-beam and collar with raking struts to the principals, and the center bay has curved wind braces to the upper tier of butt purlins. There are Tudor-arched doorways on both the ground and first floors, with a planked door on the ground floor that still has its strap hinges. The inserted floor has chamfered beams with run-out stops. Historically, the grange at Maddington was associated with the Benedictine nunnery at Amesbury, which was founded in 980.
