Description
The Coffee Tavern is a pair of cottages dating from the 17th and 18th centuries, located in the centre of Broad Hinton. The cottages are constructed of colourwashed sarsen stone, with part of the upper floor being timber framed, and feature a thatched roof. The south gable has been rebuilt using blockwork. Each cottage consists of two bays; the left cottage is two storeys tall, while the right cottage is a single storey with an attic that was later raised to two storeys. The entrance doors are located in the third bay, set within an open blockwork and tiled porch. The second bay has a blocked door and a framed upper floor, with the framing consisting of two panels high and corner braces. The fourth bay, at the north end, includes a framed dormer that was added during the raising of the walls. The cottages have various windows, some of which are paned, and feature brick gable stacks. There is also a tiled lean-to at the north end. The building occupies a significant position in the village and is locally believed to have been a coffee house.
