Description
The Church of St James is an Anglican parish church built in 1855-1856 by R J Withers on the site of an earlier building, situated within the earthworks of a medieval village. The church is constructed of flint with stone dressing and features a tiled roof. There is a door located at the north-west corner within a flush gable. The church has trefoiled lancet windows, two-light windows on the south side, and stepped lancets at the east end.
Inside, the nave and chancel are combined into one vessel, with the nave consisting of three bays supported by arch-braced collar beam roof trusses. The chancel has scissor trussed rafters. Notable fittings include a font, which is either a 12th-century original or a 19th-century copy, featuring a limestone bowl with a zig-zag design. The pulpit is an octagonal piece made of stained oak from the 18th or 19th century, and there is a 19th-century carved oak lectern in the form of an eagle. The pews are made of stained softwood.
