Description

Throope Manor is a detached house built in the mid-18th century, with later additions made around 1930 by Lord Essex and in the 1950s. The building features painted header bond brick on a limestone plinth and has a hipped tiled roof with brick stacks. The original structure is in an L-plan and is two stories tall with a five-window front. The central entrance has an 8-panelled door framed by an eared architrave and a pediment supported by consoles, flanked by two 12-pane sash windows. The first floor contains five 12-pane sashes. A moulded stone cornice runs along the plain brick parapet, and there are lead rainwater goods.

To the left, there is a 1930s wing designed in a similar style. The right side features a 19th-century canted brick bay with a 12-pane sash and a 20-pane sash to the left, two sashes to the right, and three 12-pane sashes on the first floor. The rear has a 20th-century flat-roofed extension with sashes, while the first floor retains four original sashes and has three hipped dormers in the attic. A two-storey wing was added to the right in the 1920s by Lord Essex.

Inside, the manor boasts a fine early 18th-century open well staircase with three turned balusters per tread, a wreathed handrail, carved tread ends, and a fielded panelled dado. Throughout the house, there are window shutters and six-panelled doors, with fielded panelling in the dado on the first floor. The room to the left of the entrance features reset 17th-century wainscot panelling with a strapwork frieze. A pre-1920s photograph of the manor is held in the National Monuments Record.
