Description

This is a row of almshouses built between 1844 and 1859. The terrace, numbered 55 to 65 North Street, has Gothic detailing. It is constructed from English bond gault brick on a red brick plinth, with a purple and blue slate roof and three ridge chimneys topped with cogged capping. A central gabled breakfront with bargeboards marks the entrance to numbers 59 and 61. The windows are arranged in a single range, featuring 2-light casements with gables above on the first floor, and 3-light casements on the ground floor, all with cement lintels. The doorways have 4-centred arches with stone voussoirs, leading to beaded doors, and the pavement passage also has 4-centred openings. The central porch includes a 3-light window on the first floor and a pair of doors with flat lintels. The return gable on the south-west side has a scalloped bargeboard.
