Description

The Moat House, dated 1801, is located on North Street and incorporates elements from an earlier house. It was formerly a Charity Free School, with the principal room on the first floor known as the Dormitory. The building is two storeys high and constructed of colour-washed red and blue brick. It features a plinth, a gault brick string course at the first floor, and offset dentil eaves. The hipped roof is covered with old tiles and has chimneys at both ends. The windows are glazing bar sash types, with stone voussoirs and projecting keys; there are four on the first floor and two on the ground floor to the left. To the right, there is a large tripartite window that has been inserted into a former stable entrance with a segmental head. The entrance has flush panel double doors topped by a segmental-arched fanlight under a semi-circular hooded pediment supported by two Doric columns, which are now overgrown. A Victorian footscraper is present at the entrance. The left elevation features a cornice, and there is a further parallel extension at the rear. In the yard, adjacent to a tributary stream, there is a cracked slate clock with Roman numerals that originally came from the stables at Fonthill. The interior has been somewhat altered but retains a panelled dado in the front ground floor room.
