Description

Margaret Cottage is a detached cottage dating from the mid-17th century. It features painted flint and limestone in rough chequers and has a corrugated iron roof that was formerly thatched, with an axial brick stack. The cottage has a baffle-entry plan and is two stories high with a three-window front. The central entrance consists of a half-glazed door set within a 20th-century porch. To the right of the door are two 2-light casement windows, while to the left there is one 20th-century 2-light casement and one 19th-century casement. On the first floor, there are two 20th-century 2-light casements and one 19th-century 2-light casement. The right side of the cottage has one 2-light casement on the first floor, and the left side features an attached lean-to extension on the ground floor. At the rear, there are two 2-light casements on the ground floor and one 2-light casement on the first floor. The interior is notable for its 17th-century plan and very fine carved and moulded ceiling beams, along with a matching bressumer above a blocked open fireplace, which has brick jambs reused from an unknown building. A bay added to the right of the original 17th-century two-room cottage is likely from the 18th century.
